“What makes a good salesperson? Expensive suits, sophisticated sales techniques, or something else entirely? As a newly minted sales consultant, I was faced with this question. I had a lot of respect for the new role I had evolved into from clinical consultant. Despite extensive training, I was nervous. Ironically, the launch of our innovative product PalaJet®, jokingly described as a “pressure washer for bones,” was to be my baptism by fire.
Getting my nerves under control
My first meeting with the purchasing manager in Mosbach was coming up. I was nervous. Fortunately, I had support: my colleague Alexander, who I consider one of the best in the team, accompanied me and encouraged me: “Come on, Tim, calm down. Relax!” Then he gave me some simple advice: be authentic!
The secret to success
I pushed aside the usual expectations of wearing a suit to the first meeting. Instead, I showed up in beige chinos and a white shirt and was able to just be myself. The meeting went great: a relaxed, totally laid-back atmosphere. The result? The customer chose PalaJet® - despite the higher price. We have now been working together for four years. The customer has remained loyal to us to this day. Because authenticity beats any sales pitch. My secret to success? Honesty, mentoring, and the courage to be yourself. A lesson that proves that if you stay true to yourself, you sell not only products, but also trust.”
