How we built our office ourselves

“An empty floor. A dreary room. Like a call center without life. No sooner had our new building 328 been completed than the first requests started coming in: ”QS definitely needs to move in here, they have so little space anyway." I politely took note of the initiatives, because we wanted more! We wanted to try something new. We had a vision: to create a cross-functional development team. “Agile working” was uncharted territory at that point. And my supervisor offered me the opportunity: “Train to become an Agile Coach!”
Roll up your sleeves and get started!
I threw myself into it and we got started. Our team was diverse: development, production, QA, QC, purchasing, product development, project management, engineering, regulatory – everyone was on board. We worked out a concept with an architect. We moved on to the next round. Management said “yes” to the concept idea and gave us a budget for it. We knew that it would just about cover the architect and the ancillary costs. So it was clear: this would be the pilot for our agile working. We'll just take our office into our own hands!
Instead of PowerPoint battles, we got together live at regular intervals and organized the renovation work in small teams. We did sprints. We did retros. We only moved forward with real, tangible results. Then COVID-19 hit. No matter, we pressed on. We regularly asked ourselves, “What went well and what went badly?” Even the management came by to see what we had created: long walls for the sprint boards. A large table for meetings. A giant TV. Small meeting corners, phone booths, even a chill-out area. Our office, our success. Created by us and perfectly tailored to our agile way of working.
Ramping up with team drive
But best of all: a team drive like I had never experienced before. Everyone invested their time in each other. Our team has grown and is still growing — we continue to benefit from these connections, and so does the company. A super close-knit bunch. And our first cross-functional product? Pro 4.0 is taking off worldwide. Today, I am the production manager and am overseeing the ramp-up. And I know that this is just the beginning!"
